Afforestation is the process of planting trees on land that has not been recently forested, for example, old abandoned pastures. This differs from reforestation, which involves planting forests in areas where they have been cut down or destroyed (e.g., due to fire).

Afforestation is **additional**, meaning it results in **new** carbon sequestration. It also presents a host other benefits, like creating new habitats, improving water quality, and benefiting local communities.

What is afforestation?

Our projects follow the best-in-class VM00047 and VM00045 methodologies by Verra, which ensure rigorous standards for things like governance, transparency, accurate emissions accounting and sustainable development safeguards.

Our technology allows us to adapt to other methodologies if needed, and we deliberately work with third-party, public standards to ensure visibility and traceability. Currently, our projects meet the CRCF’s core quality principles and are ready to align with its methodology once released.

What methodology do we follow?

We offer two solutions: **Afforestation** and **Impact Forestry**. Each includes multiple projects that group landowners and sites across various countries.

This makes carbon forestry accessible for the long tail of landowners who are otherwise excluded from the market due to high entry costs, enabling us to positively influence smaller rural communities while scaling carbon impact.

In our first three years since founding, we have worked with hundreds landowners across five different countries, securing a projected carbon impact of over 1 megatonne.

How many projects does Arbonics have?

Yes, both projects have significant biodiversity benefits. Afforestation introduces native tree species which create diverse microhabitats. As the forest develops, it attracts pollinators like bees, seed dispersers such as birds, and decomposers like fungi. Over time, these interactions become more complex. 

Impact Forestry, which postpones clearcutting by at least 40 years, conserves vegetation and maintains high-quality habitats for native species. Dead trees that are left behind create microhabitats for insects, and in some cases, corridors form between protected areas, which connect habitats and enable species movement.

How do you support biodiversity?
